Niklas Eurén
Recorded a birch trumpet so I could make a virtual instrument out of it. Made of birch bark, the birch trumpet, or tuohitorvi, as we call it in Finland, is a traditional Finnish instrument. I recorded long and short notes and then expanded the virtual instrument to cover four octaves. Other names for the instrument include birch bark trumpet, birch bark horn, neverlur, näverlur, tās̆u taure, ragas, daudytė, and karjapasun. I used three microphones, but one of them was apparently too close (noticed some artifacts afterwards), so I had to leave it out. In the first episode of a series, I'm recording the sound of a jouhikko, a traditional Finnish instrument. It's similar to tagelharpa/talharpa/stråkharpa. Jouhikko is a three-stringed bowed lyre, and in this case, the strings are made of gut. I captured long, short/staccato, pizzicato, and tremolo notes. The recording space is a tsasouna (or eukterion), an Orthodox house of prayer. It's located in Kalajoki, Finland. The player is Jane Ilmola, and her jouhikko is around 17 years old. Listening to a small lake, and the ice covering it, with hydrophones. I got one big crack with a lot of interesting sounds, but it happened before I could install Geofón on the ice, so this audio is hydrophones only. Unlike in the video footage, during the recording, the hydrophones were closer to the ice. I heard and felt the crack loud and clear while standing on the ice! With Geofón installed, nothing special happened. A couple of small pops, but that's all, so I didn't include it. Location is Enontekiö, Lapland, Finland. I went near Sodankylä, Lapland, Finland, to experience the reindeer round-up. GoPro, MKH 8040's and Sony PCM-D100 with me, I waited behind the wooden gates to get in, so I could capture the sounds of running and grunting reindeer close-by.
